Kids Craft: Pinwheels

Pinwheels! Little kids, big kids and adults will enjoy making this cute, easy craft. Plus, you can use them as decorations after you make them.

Pinwheels

Pinwheels are the most adorable decoration. They are super easy, and extremely inexpensive to make. Anyone little or big will enjoy making them (if they can’t use scissors they will need help from someone who can) and you probably have most if not all of the necessary items already in your house! It is a fun afternoon craft that I can sit and do with my girls while we listen to music or while we watch a movie on a rainy afternoon.

Supplies

• Scrapbook Paper (better if it is double sided) or white paper for the kids to decorate themselves
• Crayons, Markers, Colored Pencils
• Paper Cutter or Sharp Scissors
• Ruler or Straight Edge
• Pencil
• SMALL hole punch or sharp item to poke holes in paper
• Metal Brads – colored, silver or gold, really whatever you have on hand

Directions

Step 1:

If using the white paper have your kids decorate it any way that they like. Just make sure they do both sides.

Step 2:

Using a paper cutter, cut out squares, size will depend on how big you want the pinwheel. Most scrap-booking paper comes in squares. If I want them big I use the whole piece.

Step 3:

Draw a line, diagonally from corner to corner, creating 4 sections.

Step 4:

Cut along the lines, stopping about 1/4 to 1/2 inch from the center.

Step 5:

Using a SMALL hole punch, make a hole in each section in the right top corner. You also need to create a small hole in the center of the paper.

Step 6:

Push the metal brad through each hole and then through the center hole.

Step 7:

Turn it over and open the points on the brad to secure the pinwheel.

Pinwheels can be used in many ways to create a festive touch. As you can see I use them everywhere.

Here I have them hanging from my mantel (during the month of June):

I hot glued these to pencils (it is what I had on hand) and they sat in a glass jar filled with dollar store necklaces on a side table during July:

I even had one hanging from the light in my office during the month of July this year:

As you can see I use them all over. My girls (9 & 11) have gotten so good at making them that they do it on their own when I am busy doing other things. If nothing else hopefully this post has shown you some new ways to use Paper Pinwheels in your decorating! Good luck and have fun!
